Scott Spears | Director of Photography

Scott Spears is an accomplished American cinematographer, author, and educator, renowned for his extensive contributions to independent cinema and his dedication to mentoring emerging filmmakers. Born in Portsmouth, Ohio, Spears pursued his passion for filmmaking by earning both a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and a Master of Arts (MA) in Cinema Production from Ohio State University. ​

 

Throughout his prolific career, Spears has served as Director of Photography on over 30 feature films, showcasing his versatility across genres such as horror, science fiction, and action. Notable works include “Beyond Dream’s Door” (1989), “Horrors of War” (2006), and “Plaguers” (2008). His exceptional cinematography earned him an Emmy Award for the short film “A Higher Law: The Oberlin-Wellington Rescue of 1858,” which he co-produced with Christina Paolucci.

 

In addition to his cinematographic achievements, Spears is a published author. His bibliography includes works that reflect his expertise in filmmaking and storytelling. Beyond his creative endeavors, he imparts his knowledge to students as a lecturer at Ohio State University, where he teaches screenwriting and video production, nurturing the next generation of filmmakers. ​

 

Spears also owns and operates Production Partners Media, a company specializing in various media production services. His commitment to the craft extends to his personal interests, as he is an avid gamer who enjoys playing Dungeons & Dragons and has a penchant for watching a wide array of films, ranging from critically acclaimed masterpieces to delightfully bad movies. ​

 

Through his multifaceted career, Scott Spears has significantly impacted the film industry, both through his creative work behind the camera and his dedication to education, inspiring and guiding aspiring filmmakers.
