Dothan, Alabama is strategically located in the southeast corner of Alabama, near the borders of Georgia and Florida. With a population of around 65,000, it has a small-town feel, but Dothan is strategically within driving distance of Mobile, Pensacola, Montgomery, Tallahassee, and plenty of locations in between--making it an ideal hub for finding film locations. Several film and video production companies make their home in or near Dothan, so if you're thinking of a career in filmmaking as a film director, film producer, film editor, or cameraman, there are opportunities to learn close by, without having to relocate to someplace like Los Angeles to go to film school.
Some of the well-known movies that have been filmed in or within range of Dothan, Alabama include:
Bloodlines, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, War and Remembrance, The Insider, Friday the 13th Part VII, and Final Destination 4, to name a few. Scenes from To Kill a Mockingbird were also shot not far from Dothan. Major film companies such as Warner Brothers and Touchstone regularly shoot films in this region, making it a terrific connection point for film school students and filmmaking professionals.
