Located in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley in central California, Fresno is California's fifth largest city, with a population of over a half million. Not far from Fresno, the town of Visalia anchors another metropolis of over 400,000. Fresno alone hosts over a dozen television stations. Film Schools in the Fresno-Visalia pale in comparison to Los Angeles, its neighbor 3 hours to the south. However, professional filmmaking is quite prevalent in the area, and numerous film and TV production companies are located in the Fresno-Visalia area. There are film offices for Fresno, Fresno County and Tulare County (where Visalia is located), and Fresno also hosts its own film festival. If you are considering a career in filmmaking as a film director, film producer, film editor, or cameraman, the Fresno-Visalia area could be an excellent alternative for you, particularly if you wish to avoid living in the craziness of L.A..
Lots of well-known movies have done location shooting in the Fresno-Visalia area, including Wag the Dog, Prehysteria!, Desperate Measures, Indiana Jones & the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and the classic film The Fountainhead. This area also sees plenty of TV production activity. Some of the shows and series filmed here include The X-Files, Strikeforce Challengers, and episodes of Cops, Rescue 911 and WWF Raw.
Many professional commercials, TV shows and Feature Films are shot in the Fresno-Visalia area every year. Its close proximity to Los Angeles, San Francisco and other key locations makes it ideal for both film students and filmmaking professionals.
