Don’t Spend More on your Film Education if You Don’t Have to
Lansing is the state capital of Michigan, located in the south-central part of the lower peninsula. Much of the city itself grew up around the establishment of an auto factory in the 1890s, building the car that would become known as Oldsmobile. Several industry pros have hailed from this area, including screenwriter Jim Cash (who wrote Top Gun), actors Timothy Busfield, Steven Segall, and Burt Reynolds, and film director John Hughes. Hosting a population of around 113,000 people today, Lansing is home to several production companies and is within driving distance of lakeshore views, beautiful forests and countryside, and major cities such as Detroit and Chicago. Additionally, Michigan has one of the most generous tax incentive plans available in the nation for filmmakers, attracting many film productions to the area. If you are thinking about a filmmaking career as a film producer, film director, or otherwise, Lansing makes a great alternative to the craziness of L.A. or New York.
