The city of Sioux Falls is a vibrant, growing city, having grown by over 27% in the last decade alone. Currently, Sioux Falls host a population of around 158,000 people, with a surrounding metro area of around 238,000. About an hour and a half west along I-90, the town of Mitchell hosts a quieter community of around 15,000 people. Together, these towns offer a variety of filmmaking opportunities, including urban areas, historic landmarks, and the falls along the Big Sioux River, from which Sioux Falls derives its name. If you are looking at a career in film as a film director, film producer, film editor, or cameraman, Sioux Falls holds more opportunities than you might think.
Movies, commercials, TV shows, and documentaries are filmed all over South Dakota regularly, including in the Sioux Falls-Mitchell area. Some examples include the films Almost Destiny, Class President, and Under the Influence. Regionally, the greater South Dakota area has been the film site for such movies as Into the Wild, Starship Troopers, Hidalgo, and the classic TV series Gunsmoke.
